Second Semester Honors Book Club
We read some great literature.
Half The Sky, Cat's Cradle, Fahrenheit 451, all sorts of fascinating social commentary. I tried to write my own in the style of Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., but I wasn't able to mimic his dry style. I also drew a very nice picture for Fahrenheit 451, but I can't find it. My short story is below.

Reflection The Honors curriculum I participated in was interesting, as I got the chance to discuss what I read with my peers, and get their input on it. Typically, I read books alone, and go with my interpretation as the true interpretation. It was good to broaden my mind. For my projects, I chose Fahrenheit 451 and Cat's Cradle, as the dark, dry humor in each of them appealed to me. For Fahrenheit 451, I created a metaphorical illustration which sadly disappeared, and wrote the story to the right for Cat's Cradle.
The book that had the most profound impact on me was Cat's Cradle. I'd read it before, but didn't really get it. I didn't have the sense of humor developed to laugh at the futility and absurdity present, and the touches of reality. However, re-reading with a different perspective allowed me to glean a few core nuggets from it, about how life really is, and how Vonnegut tends to portray it. His absurd, simultaneously bleak and bright style conveys to me what I see in life. I regretted taking the Honors option second semester. I was also taking Honors Chemistry, and the stress and workload was more than I was prepared to deal with. But I'm here now, and I've done all the things I needed to do. It was a trial in perseverance. At Animas, we talk a lot about perseverance. Junior year is when it becomes critical. Were it not for the sudden pressure between my nose and the grindstone, I don't think I'd've made it through the year with the confidence that I have. Life happens in funny ways. Laugh at it, keep moving. |
