I will be interning at 4CornersTV, which is a local group specializing in short stories of relevant local entertainment, whether that’s something about Snowdown, or just general Durango. 4CornersTV is a part of Ballantine Communications, which is also responsible for the Durango Herald, the Dolores Star, the Cortez Journal, and the Mancos Times, among others. They are spreading their efforts to Texas with a magazine aimed at promoting our tourism industry. To quote their about us, “Ballantine Communications Inc. is a privately held, U. S. based company with over 60 years of experience in the news and entertainment media products and services industry. The organization operates across print, video, and digital platforms and employs approximately 200 employees that work at The Durango Herald, Directory Plus, BCI Media Services, 4 Corners TV, Cortez Journal, Mancos Times, Pine River Times, 4 Corners Expos, Adsperity, and other businesses within the organization. As an organization with a long legacy and a highly sophisticated model, Ballantine Communications imparts innovation into every area of the organization, develops a diversified product that meets a wide demographic and advertising base, and continues to be a forerunner in digital media advancement.”
As you can see, it’s very wide-spread, and covers all sorts of media interactions. I feel that this wide range of options will make my internship a pleasant prospect. The type of work is all sorts of field-reporting work, looking at stories from Telluride to Farmington. I’ll mainly be acting as smart muscle, but will also be allowed to work with video editing. This will allow me to improve on my stated goal of learning more about everything involved. In my time there, I will be mentored by Laurie Kain, who is a major part of Ballantine, and the head of 4CornersTV.
My goal is to experience everything that 4CornersTV has to offer me. Hopefully, I can use these skills to spread information to my community about our local events. I will also learn about communications on a broad scale. I seek to get a better idea as to what’s going on in my community, and to learn how I can effectively share this information.
This goal will be assisted by my project, which is to make a show of my own, on an unknown topic. This will require that I gain some video editing skills, which will be useful in many multimedia projects later on. The ability to use that technology will be attractive on a resumé, so there’s a major bonus. In order to have a polished, professional piece, I’ll need to start early on my project in the internship. I’m very excited for this opportunity, and look forward to whatever may come of it.
