Humanities Globalization Project
For this project, we were assigned the task of understanding what globalization is, and, as per Animas standards, presenting this knowledge in a relevant manner. Globalization is, essentially, the spread of concepts and products across the globe, and a uniformity developing from this spread. For this project, we were given the task of selecting an aspect of globalization, and creating a political cartoon, and an Op-Ed (short for "Opposite Editor", like you see in the morning paper; literally a piece opposite the editor's column in terms of placement) writing piece. Included is my attempt at both of these things.
Learning Reflection
What new understanding do you have about globalization after completing this project? What are your big takeaways?
One major thing I gained from this project is an understanding of what globalization is, as per my definition above. It's consequences were definitely thrust into a more prominent place in my mind as a result. Consequences being the interchange of ideas wiping out uniqueness amongst cultures. I also gained a new skill, cartooning, which is showcased below.
Cartoon Reflection
I have, as a cartoonist, increased significantly in skill. When I started this project, all my characters were stick figures, with the exception of the cow. The cow was a blotchy blob. The first thing I did to rectify these issues was to go look at some online tutorials for these items. They became slightly more cow-shaped. For the cow, this was excellent. For the people, not so much. So, I kept looking at these images, and re-drawing things. And I'm pleased with the results.
Op-Ed Reflection
The key difference in Op-Ed writing, at least for me, was the goal of brevity and directness. It taught me that I need to focus less on florid prose sometimes, and put my attention on making sure that I am effectively communicating my point.
One major gain from this project which I will use in the future is the focus on refinement. Although it was not a big project, refinement was key, and that is something that I hope to take with me. That ability to look at something minor, and make drastic and subtle changes to it, in order to improve it's quality.
